This Week in Honors:
Let’s get ready for Registration
As we hit the midpoint of the semester, many students are already thinking about which classes they should plan on for spring. Taking the right classes means that you make steady progress toward your academic goals—completing your AA, preparing to apply for transfer, and earning points toward your Honors credential. And, when it comes to taking Honors courses, it looks like we are going to have more exciting offerings than ever before, including Intro to Environmental Science and a number of Fine Arts classes. To get ready for registration, take a little time to look at your degree audit, consider which classes you still need to complete for your AA and transfer, and think about which of these might be a good fit for next semester.
Soon, Honors will post an announcement about Honors courses, dates, and times, as well as updated advising hours for Spring registration. If you’ve had a little time to plan ahead for spring, you’ll be in great shape to nab the classes you need to make the Spring an excellent semester!
Keep collecting Honors Points
To make steady progress toward your Honors diploma and maintain your status in the Honors Program, it’s essential that you take Honors classes and earn Honors points through involvement with enrichment, research, service, leadership, and community opportunities. A great way to keep earning points is to take advantage of the options in the weekly newsletter! Every involvement below can earn you points and get you closer to that Honors credential. More information about Honors points is coming soon, but if you have any questions just reach out and let me know.

USM Mapping Freedom Summer 202 REU Program
The “Mapping Freedom”: A National Science Foundation – Research Experience for Undergraduates at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is recruiting applicants for its Summer 2024 cohort.
The research team of REU participants, faculty, and graduate students will use data from the “Civil War & Reconstruction Governors of Mississippi” project to map the complex process of emancipation in the state. Specifically, they will use letters and petitions from that period that reveal how Mississippians, especially Black Mississippians, responded to the end of slavery and navigated new freedoms during the Civil War and Reconstruction. Participants will help develop a new, user-friendly, free visualization tool to help users understand this complex process and see how they can use this same tool for their own classroom or research needs. No computing experience is required or expected for this opportunity.
During the program, participants will also attend a variety of professionalism opportunities. These include graduate school workshops, mock presentations at the USM Center for Speaking, writing workshops at the USM Center for Writing, and discussions with faculty members and graduate students to learn about their experiences in digital humanities, Geography, Computer Science, and related fields.

Become an Energy Coach with Community Weatherization Coalition
Are you looking for a meaningful volunteering opportunity where you can lend a hand to your neighbors, conserve natural resources, AND learn tips and tricks to make homes more sustainable? The Community Weatherization Coalition (CWC) is accepting volunteers to take their three-part volunteer Energy Coach training, which kicks off on Wednesday, October 18th from 5:30-8:30pm. Once they "graduate" from the training and pass a background check, new Energy Coaches are prepared to visit our neighbors' homes to help them save household water and energy - and reduce their utility expenses - during what the CWC calls a home energy tune-up. This hands-on, rewarding volunteer role lends a hand to local families while conserving water and energy for the health of our planet! Energy Coaches also will be joining the CWC's lively and welcoming community of science-based helpers, and will have a chance to meet and talk with experts in a variety of fields. A meal is provided at each session to help with fitting the training into busy schedules. Learn more and reserve your seat today. Please reach out to info@communityweatherization.org with any questions. Information about the CWC's Summer and Fall 2024 internship opportunities is available here.
