Spotlight on Honors Classes
What does it mean for a class to be Honors? What are you signing up for when you select the Honors version of a class? From now until the beginning of Fall, we’re going to highlight some of the classes you can sign up for, to give you an idea of what to expect. This week, we’re kicking things off with Honors Social Psychology.
Honors Technical Writing
Course Number: ENC2210, Section 0H1
Department: Communication
Schedule: Monday and Wednesday, 1:00pm - 2:15pm
Why Take This Course? I’m Peter Concannon, and I hope to share with you some strategies for—and even more just simple exposure to—writing and speaking in professional settings. When I decided to leave my career in law and return to my first love, English studies, I TA’ed and taught technical writing, among other courses. That course featured a lot of techniques I had to learn on the job through trial and lots of error. I’m hoping to make your entry into your profession of choice at least a little less stressful through learning about writing, speaking, and using visual aids.
Why Honors? Is it Harder? This Honors course will be different from more conventional classes since it will to some extent feature AI, allowing us to study the drawbacks of AI in writing (and learning) as well as its advantages. I’ll ask you to research and make suggestions on how to incorporate AI usefully. I expect to learn as much or more from you as you will from me in this area. We will also play with AI image generation and think of ways we can incorporate these visuals into presentations and other documents. I wouldn’t say this is harder than my “regular” sections, but we will try to experiment with the new tools of AI.
Roach Milk, Anyone? We will highlight a semester project first developed in an Honors class but which is so interesting and useful that I have incorporated it in all sections: a feasibility study evaluating whether a new, narrow, partial solution to a particular social problem could be effective and practical. Students learn a lot about the world through that project, turn out some fascinating work, and end up teaching everyone in the class. You will research a problem and solution you identify and refine, in consultation with the professor. To give you a “flavor,” here is one particularly striking example: believe it or not, to resolve the environmental damage caused by raising dairy cattle, scientists have been studying whether milk from cockroaches could prove an acceptable, environmentally friendly substitute. One of my previous students let me know about that “solution,” but I admit it makes me a little queasy—and I doubt you will be seeing it any time soon on the shelves of Publix.

Register for Honors Classes Today
Once you have selected your courses for the coming term, including your honors courses, you can request Honors courses be added to your schedule using the Honors Registration Request. In fact, you don’t need to wait until your registration date to do this—you can request Honors classes right now. Note that you don’t need to include your whole schedule, just your Honors classes.
How Can I Register?
As an SF Honors Student, you have access both Honors and non-Honors courses. The process for registration is a little different, however, depending on which classes you plan to take:
Non-Honors Classes: Log into eSantaFe , then navigate to “Classes” and “Register for Classes.” Select the sections you want and register for them. It’s that easy!
Honors Classes: Registering for Honors classes requires that you submit an Honors Registration Request. Select all of the classes you would like for the coming semester and we’ll get you registered the next time we process requests.
Clear Your Registration Holds
While you’re logging into eSantaFe and planning ahead, take a moment to check in “My Status” and clear any registration holds. Whether it’s a financial obligation, the Registration Agreement, or just a late library book, there are a number of holds that can prevent you from registering for classes when your time comes. Take care of these ahead of time to make sure you can get registered right away when Advanced Registration starts.
Plan the Perfect Schedule
Scheduling requirements are different for each student, but there are some general guidelines, however, that are helpful as you build your schedule for the summer and fall. Follow these brief steps to start building a strong plan.
Maintain your honors status: To remain in the Honors Program, you will need to register for at least 3 credits of Honors coursework for the upcoming semester, or earn 30 Honors points. Click here for a listing of honors courses to be offered this coming semester.
Maintain progress toward your degree and/or transfer: You can review your progress toward earning your degree, as well as any courses required or suggested for transfer by reviewing your Degree Audit in eSantaFe. If you have any questions about degree or transfer requirements, take a minute to connect with the Academic Advisement Center.
Balance your time: Santa Fe expects that you will invest 2 - 3 hours per week for each credit hour that you register. This means that, for example, a full-time, 12 credit, schedule equates to a roughly 24- to 36-hour per week commitment.
New to Honors? Remember to take a first-semester credit
We know that having a strong foundation and common academic experience are great ways to make sure you are successful in the Honors Program. As such, all new Honors Program members accepted for Spring 2025 are required to sign up for one of the following courses for the Spring 2025 semester.
Sign up for one of the courses below. Each course is a one-credit class that will require up to 3 - 4 hours of involvement per week. If the class is SLS1320, you will need to submit a registration request, but you can enroll in LIS1002 and LIS2004 via eSantaFe like any other class. If you are not able to register for one of these courses or if registering for one of these courses for the spring would present an inordinate burden, please email honors@sfcollege.edu so that we can coordinate on a solution.
Option 1: Honors Foundation Seminar (SLS1320) The Honors Foundation Seminar gives you an opportunity to connect with other members of the Honors Program, SF resources, and our local community. Build a strong foundation in the Honors Program while working together on a semester-long service project that supports a local organization! Because this is an Honors course, it is worth 10 Honors Points. This class meets once per week on Fridays—section GH1 at 10:00 and section GH2 at 11:30—and begins in Fall G (September 22).
Option 2: Library Online Resources (LIS1002) Library Online Resources is a one credit hour course that provides an introduction to information retrieval using SF library databases. This class is available online in either Spring A (first half of spring) or Spring B (second half of spring). You can register for this class on your own through eSantaFe.
Option 3: Internet Research (LIS2004) Internet Research is a one credit hour course that focuses on methods of accessing information resources available through the Internet. Students will learn how to design effective search strategies and how to retrieve, evaluate, and cite Internet sources. This class is available online in either Spring A (first half of spring) or Spring B (second half of spring). You can register for this class on your own through eSantaFe.
How do I Know What to Take?
We’re all more successful when we know why we’re doing what we’re doing, and this semester is a perfect time to build or refine your academic plan. Whether you are working on your first plan of study, created yours with me last semester, or got your start with Professor Hom, now is a great time to connect with an advisor to build a plan. Just remember that you want to take at least one Honors class per semester.
Meet with your Advisor in the SF Academic Advisement Center
Your advisor in the AAC is the expert in preparing for graduation from SF and transfer to a university and they are dedicated to supporting your education and career goals. Make an appointment to put together your academic plan now, before it’s time to register. You can learn more about the AAC through the SF Advisement website, or set up an appointment to meet with your advisor.
Meet with a UF advisor in the UF@SF Center
If you are planning to transfer to UF in the future, now is also an excellent time to plan on meeting with an advisor from your intended plan of study. Contact the UF@SF Center for information on when UF advisors will be visiting to meet with prospective transfer students.
Honors Schedule: Fall 2025
