Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you are finally getting a chance to really settle into the semester. We’ve already had an exciting start with new classes, new clubs, and new partnerships—all giving Honors community members exciting ways to connect, engage, and get the most out of our time together. This week, I’m excited to bring you even more, including an information session about volunteer and internship opportunities with UF’s Harn Museum of Art, community and employment possibilities, and even the chance to join our team of navigators!

“Article II: The Presidency Through the Eyes of the Framers” – Professor Emeritus Donna Waller (Wed, Sept 17, 10:00 am)
“Birthright Citizenship: History and Future” – Professor James Maggio (Thu, Sept 18, 1:00 pm)
The lectures are free, open to the public, and include a Q&A session where you can ask your own questions. This is a perfect chance to connect course knowledge with real-world issues, engage with professors, and add meaningful points to your Honors transcript!

Calculator And Math Skills Workshop

Join Dr. Mike Weaver for the Calculator and Math Skills Workshop to learn how to use calculators efficiently and master key math concepts like y = mx + b. Attend any workshop to earn 5 Honors points, or complete all three sessions for 20 points. Purpose and Belonging Journey Series
Earn 30 Honors Points for completion of the series.
Join the Purpose and Belonging Journey to explore your interests, values, and strengths while connecting with new people and campus resources. This program includes weekly Thursday sessions from 2:30–3:30 PM covering topics like discovering your strengths, overcoming imposter syndrome, and charting your path. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate and digital badge to showcase their growth.
Sessions start September 18, 2025, and run through November 6, 2025. Don’t miss this opportunity to reflect, grow, and set yourself up for success!

D.O.O.R.S. Scholarship & Mentorship Program – Apply by September 30!
Earn 10 Honors points for submitting a national scholarship application (cap of 3)
The BioPharmaceutical Technology Center Institute (BTCI), in collaboration with Promega, is offering D.O.O.R.S. (Development Of Our Research Scientists) Scholarships to 10 outstanding undergraduate students pursuing life sciences. Selection is based on academic excellence, professional promise, and commitment to research or industry engagement.
Scholarship Benefits:
$5,000 scholarship paid directly to the student’s educational institution
Mentorship Program with a professional from the biotech industry, including one-on-one and group sessions
Participation in D.O.O.R.S. Scholar’s Day at BTCI / Promega campus in Madison, WI (2026), with in-person networking opportunities

5 Honors Points For Attendance
William S. BURROUGHS & David BRADSHAW: Propagation , a major travelling exhibition featuring previously unseen original artworks by the legendary Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs and his longtime collaborator David Bradshaw. This thought-provoking survey examines how ideas are disseminated and transformed , showcasing works created with unconventional tools including firearms and dynamite. The exhibition is presented by the Santa Fe College Art Gallery in partnership with the Bob Rauschenberg Gallery at FSW.

Come see the landmark musical RENT, presented by The Gainesville Community Playhouse. Set in New York City’s bohemian East Village during the early 1990s, this powerful production follows a group of friends and artists as they navigate the challenges of love, loss, and survival amidst the AIDS epidemic. The story centers on Mark, a filmmaker, and his roommate, Roger, an aspiring musician with AIDS. As they struggle to pay rent and find meaning, they confront themes of friendship, identity, and the realities of living and dying in America.

MUSE/ HARN Internship Info Session

There will be an information session with representatives from the University of Florida’s Harn Museum of Art: Anna Gamboa and Errol Wilson. They will introduce two exciting opportunities open to Santa Fe College students:
Paid Internships: Hands-on experience in museum departments such as education, curatorial, marketing, and more.
MUSE Volunteer Program: A semester-long role creating and leading programming, developing leadership skills, and engaging directly with museum visitors.

PEAK Literacy
30 Honors Points for Program Participation
Are you looking to make an impact in our community? Do you want to support learning for students of all ages? Do you need a way to earn your Honors Points for Fall? If so, reach out to Leah Galione to learn about a one-of-a-kind opportunity from PEAK Literacy. Students who volunteer with PEAK literacy will receive training ahead of time and work with students on building literacy skills. Honors students who serve as volunteer tutors will earn 30 Honors Points per semester. Virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities are available.

Conversation Cafe
5 Honors Points for event participation
Forming a community with native speakers will expose you to different ways of thinking, bonding over shared ideals, and leave you a changed person should you do it enough. Our conversation café aims to help those in Gainesville establish community and learn about each other, directly from one another. All language classes, including ESOL students and international students, will be invited, so there will be beginners from all languages. You are welcome to not practice a language and to instead speak casually with everyone else who is there. Please come and enjoy!
They will be catering coffee at the event!

Job Description Summary
The Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo, a unique 10-acre Zoo, is the only Zoo on a college campus accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The SF Teaching Zoo is home to over 70 different species of animals and is maintained by students, faculty, and staff year-round.
The educational aide for the Zoo’s guest services will provide a professional, helpful, and welcoming environment for all Zoo guests. The aide will assist in the gift shop, at the ticket window, and with events while providing exemplary customer service.
Qualifications
Required:
Current Santa Fe College student, enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.
Minimum 2.5 GPA and good academic standing.
Strong communication, multitasking, and interpersonal skills.
Punctual and reliable.
Background check required.

Job Description
The following 6 goals focus on creating a student-centered environment that provides equal service to individuals at all levels of education and preparedness:
Serves as a peer mentor and academic role model for students
Supports students in areas of time management, habit formation, organization, stress management, prioritization, and study skills
Makes appropriate referrals to other campus resources
Assists students with goal setting and developing academic goals
Partners with students to develop and improve academic skills
Participates in student outreach initiatives and events
Qualifications
Required: Educational Aide employees must be a currently enrolled Santa Fe College student, in good academic and behavioral standing, and taking six (6) or more credit hours. Additionally, the peer coach must meet the following:
Prior to an offer of an employment being made, the endorsement of a tutor trainer and/or supervisor.
SF Cumulative GPA of a C or higher
All applicants must have completed a minimum of one semester
Other: A criminal background check will be conducted.

The Emerging Leaders Program is the perfect opportunity to meet new people while engaging with the community by getting connected through activities on campus. Additionally, this program benefits your personal growth while enhancing your leadership potential! At the end of the program, students will be recognized with a certificate (attendance is mandatory, one absence will be excused)
